Organizations find it increasingly difficult to stay competitive in today's global economy. In training and development (T&D), it is helpful to develop competencies that focus on knowledge, skills and/or abilities. But neither the field of T&D, nor competency within the field, is static. Two of the most apparent changes in T&D are the shift to performance improvement and the use of technology. Thus the skills, knowledge, and abilities involving these areas will continue to become increasingly necessary for T&D professionals. The effective use of human resources is seen as a prerequisite for improving national and corporate economic performance. This has led to training and development increasing its importance. Training and Development helps in optimizing the utilization of human resource that further helps the employee to achieve the organizational goals as well as their individual goals. In the new millennium, the knowledge revolution has brought tremendous changes in information technology. The training inputs cannot remain constant because of the dynamic pace of change. Obsolescence will occur fast as there will be constant gap between the job requirements and the individual's capabilities. Training and development activity both in terms of quantity and quality will need to be augmented. The effective use of human resources is seen as a prerequisite for improving national and corporate economic performance. This has led to training and development increasing its importance as an academic subject.
